Protective Doors, Shutters and Structural Hardening

Hardened supplies certified protective doors, shutters, hatches, gates, glazing and structural hardening systems for residential, commercial, industrial, government and defence applications.

These systems can be used to strengthen homes, safe rooms, shelters, control rooms, critical infrastructure, secure facilities, compounds and other protected spaces against defined threats including forced entry, ballistic attack, blast effects, and gas or contamination ingress.

Protective hardware should be specified by tested performance, not by marketing terms such as “heavy duty” or “secure.” Hardened can help define the threat brief, identify the protected envelope and supply hardware matched to the required resistance level.

Structural Hardening: The Always-On Layer

A bunker or safe room only protects occupants once they reach it. Structural hardening strengthens the building or protected zone itself.

This can be especially important where the concern is forced entry, targeted intrusion, civil unrest, looting, ballistic threat, or the protection of critical rooms and access points. Depending on the project, the protected envelope may be a single room, a hardened residence, a secure internal core, a shelter access route, a control room, a commercial facility or a critical infrastructure asset.

For a deeper discussion of how home hardening fits into broader protection planning, see our article on Protection From “Everything”: Bunker, Safe Room or Hardened Home?

Protective Doors, Gates and Hatches

Hardened can supply standard and custom protective doors, gates and hatches for shelters, safe rooms, secure buildings and high-risk facilities.

Depending on the project brief, these may include:

  • forced-entry-resistant doors;

  • ballistic-resistant doors;

  • blast-resistant doors;

  • gas-tight shelter doors and hatches;

  • protective gates;

  • bunker hatches;

  • secure access doors for critical rooms and facilities.

These products are used in applications such as civil-defence shelters, military shelters, command centres, nuclear facilities, banks, secure residences, critical infrastructure and other high-security environments.

Protective Roller Shutters and Opening Protection

Openings are often the weak point in an otherwise strong structure. Hardened can supply protective roller shutters and opening-protection systems for windows, doors, service openings and vulnerable facades. Depending on the selected system, shutters may provide forced-entry resistance, ballistic resistance, blast/debris mitigation or a combination of protective functions.

Protective shutters can be used in:

  • private residences;

  • safe rooms and hardened rooms;

  • commercial and industrial buildings;

  • government and defence facilities;

  • guard posts and secure compounds;

  • critical infrastructure sites.

Ballistic and Forced-Entry Wall Systems

Doors and windows are only part of the protected envelope. In many structures, the walls themselves may require upgrading.

Hardened supplies composite armour panels, ballistic wall systems and attack-resistant wall upgrades for new or existing buildings. These systems can be used to strengthen selected rooms, external walls, control rooms, safe rooms, secure offices, guard facilities and other protected areas.

Depending on the product and specification, wall systems may provide enhanced resistance to ballistic attack, forced entry or fragmentation. They can often be integrated into conventional construction and finished discreetly.

Blast Mitigation and Structural Reinforcement

For suitable projects, Hardened can facilitate blast mitigation products and structural reinforcement systems, including blast mitigation fabric and composite reinforcement solutions used in government, industrial, defence and special-purpose facilities.

These systems may be relevant for critical infrastructure, command spaces, secure facilities, shelter upgrades and selected high-risk private or commercial projects.

Gas-Tight and CBRN-Ready Openings

For shelters and protected spaces, Hardened can supply gas-tight doors, hatches, valves and related opening-protection components.

Gas-tightness is important for CBRN/NBC protection, smoke protection and toxic-atmosphere scenarios, but it must be understood as part of a wider system. The full protected envelope, ventilation, filtration, overpressure, and penetrations must be designed together.

Hardened can assist with integrating gas-tight openings and CBRN filtration into shelters, safe rooms and protected facilities where this is part of the design brief.

Standards and Performance

Protective products should be specified by tested performance, not by marketing terms such as “heavy duty,” “secure” or “bulletproof.”

Depending on the product and application, relevant standards may include forced-entry resistance classes, ballistic resistance standards, blast engineering criteria, gas-tightness requirements, fire ratings and project-specific performance specifications.

For an introduction to ballistic and forced-entry resistance classes, see our article: Understanding Ballistic & Forced Entry Protection.

For the difference between tested civil-defence systems and improvised protection, see Civil Defence Standards.

How Hardened Can Assist

Hardened can assist with:

  • defining the threat brief;

  • identifying the protected envelope;

  • recommending suitable protective hardware;

  • supplying certified protective products;

  • coordinating with architects, engineers, builders, security consultants and installers;

  • integrating doors, shutters, glazing, wall systems, hatches and shelter access into a coherent protective design.

The right solution depends on the threat, the structure, the required performance and the budget.
